Fisheries
Goa has a coastal line of about 105 kms. and inland water ways upto 250
kms. The coast is full of creeks and estuaries formed by rivers. The
coastal and inshore waters are very rich in fishery resources specially
Mackerels and Sardines. Little wonder then that fish constitutes a major
food item for Goan palate. Thus fishery is an attractive area of business
besides employing a large number of population. The fishermen population
is 30225. The fish marine catch in 1998-99 is estimated at 65,841 tonnes
valued at Rs. 9,029 lakhs.
The main varieties of fishes and other marine food products available in
Goa are :
Electronic Industry
The Government has emphasised the importance of a
strong electronic industry in an emerging Information Society in the
coming years. And focussed on building a robust infrastructure and framing
and implementing an Information Technology Policy for providing a
framework of actions and future guidance. The recommendations of this
policy includes Action Plans, IT Governance and development of Software
industry.
As a major attraction
and boost to Electronics Industry, the State Government plans to set up
the following centres with the help of ET&T, a public sector unit under
the Department of Electronics, Government of India.
Mining Industry
Mining in Goa started during the Portuguese period.
But modernization took place after independence. Government also poured in
money to energise the sector through incorporation of modern technology.
Most of the mines are in private hands as leased out by the Portuguese
authority in pre-liberation days, and inherited by the present owners.
Iron ore, manganese,
bauxite, high magnesia limestone and clay are the chief minerals of
economic importance found in Goa. The mining industry in Goa provides
employment to about 11,000 persons directly and about 10,000 persons
indirectly.
Iron Ore Industry
Iron, manganese and bauxite ores are the major
minerals found in Goa. The iron ore industry is the main industry and the
backbone of Goan economy. In 1996-97 the total mineral ore produced in Goa
was 137.37 lakh tonnes, of which iron ore consists 136.43 lakh tonnes.
The iron ore deposits of Goa consist essentially of hematite and are
associated with the ferrogenous quartzite and phylites. The deposits
containing an average Fe content of 63% by and large are concentrated in
the northern and central parts of the territory.
Mining is both manual and mechanical employing open-cast method. The
annual production of iron ore is around 15 million tonnes.
The iron of Goa is
mainly exported to Japan, European countries, China and South Korea
through Mormugao Harbour. The export of iron ore during 97-98 was to the
tune of 18.44 million tonnes and foreign exchange earning was Rs.906.09
crores.
Arts and Crafts
The art and craft of Goa is the product of the aesthetic blend of
Portuguese and Indian cultures. The crafts of the state are intricately
beautiful, capturing the fancies of tourists and locals alike. These
crafts can be at best described as a mirror of Goa's perennial glory and
beauty and they have carved a niche for themselves by winning critical
acclaim of the connoisseurs of the art world.
The major art forms of the
state include bamboo craft, woodcarving, brass metals, seashell craft,
Papier-Mache, and wooden lacquer ware. Other important crafts of the state
include Jute Macrame, Fabric Collage, Plaster of Paris, Crochet and
embroidery, fiber and Batik prints, fiber stone carving, Coconut shell
carving, metal embossing, silver and imitation jewelry, cotton dolls, soft
toys, woolen tapestry, and artistic weaving.
Handicrafts
Goa's distinct identity enriched by a remarkable blend
of Indian and Portuguese culture is perhaps best reflected in the arts and
crafts fashioned by the hands of Goan artists. Simple yet intricately
beautiful, abstract yet exquisite, these creations have captured the
fancies of locals and tourists alike. They are indeed a mirror of Goa's
perennial glory and beauty. Goan artists have indeed carved a niche for
themselves with a myriad of handicrafts that have been the connoisseur of
all eyes, the world over.
The original and traditional crafts of Goa are:
Pottery & Terra-cotta :- are traditional
crafts with utility-cum-decorative items produced by the potters with
artistic perfection and realistic finish. The items produced include
flower garden pots, bowls with floral designs, figures of saints, Gods'
and Godesses' and animals, ashtrays and pen holders. etc.
Brass metal ware craft :- while utensils
of utility are made of sheet metal (copper), brass metal casting is a
craft passed on from one generation to another practiced on hereditary
basis. The items produced include oil lamps in various designs, candle
stands, temple towers, church bells, ashtrays, etc.
Wooden laquerware/Wood turning :- The
items produced are cradels, babycarts, toys, corner stands, etc.
Crochet & embroidery :- Works such as
table cloths, children and ladies gartments, pillow and cussion covers,
linen, etc.
Bamboo Craft :- such as flower baskets,
mats, and letter-holders, pen stands, fans and other decorative items.
Fiber craft :- shopping bags, ladies
purses, coasters and wall hangings, etc. made of banana or sisal Fiber.
Jute Macrame craft :- decorative bags,
belts, wall hanging, lamp shades, flower pots, hangers, etc.
Coconut mask carving :- done on coconut
shells.
Sea shell craft:-the
items produced include ashtrays, lamp shades, coasters, chandeliers,
curtains, pot hangers, table mats, clocks, mirror frame, etc. |
